Different Types of Water Heater Installations

When it’s time for a water heater installation, you have two options. You can opt for either a conventional hot water heater or a tankless water heater. Both have benefits and downsides to consider, and our experts are happy to help you figure out which would work best for your unique needs. Note that both kinds are available no matter what your current setup is. If you want to upgrade or replace your unit altogether, it’s important to consider tankless vs. conventional installations.

Conventional

A conventional hot water heater is what most people still have, and it involves either electric heating elements or gas burners along with a hot water tank. It works by using a heat exchanger to reheat the water in the tank when the temperature falls below the thermostat setting. A tank’s energy efficiency is measured by an energy factor, which is abbreviated as EF. The higher the EF number is, the more efficient the water heater is.

Some advantages of a standard water heater are that the initial cost, repair, and maintenance expenses are typically quite low. The downside, however, is that tank water heaters typically aren’t as efficient as tankless heaters. They also take up more space overall. Plus, hot water may run out if you use a lot of it in succession. For example, you won’t want to be the last one in a family of four to take a shower in the morning.

Tankless

As the name suggests, tankless water heaters don’t operate by constantly reheating a tank of water. Instead, they create hot water on-demand using more recently developed technology. This is also why tankless water heaters are still relatively new. Because of their tankless design, these water heaters are generally more efficient than their tanked counterparts. They also take up less space due to the absence of a storage tank, freeing up space for other purposes. To find the right-sized tankless water heater for your home, you’ll need to consider your needs and the unit’s gallons per minute rating.

The advantages of tankless hot water heaters are significant, as they typically last longer and operate much more efficiently than conventional water heaters. Plus, their size makes it easier to install them in tight quarters. There are some drawbacks, however, as these heaters are typically more expensive upfront than a conventional water heater. Plus, the hot water heater installation cost can be higher, especially if you’re upgrading from a conventional heater to a tankless heater.

What Should You Do if the Water in the Hot Water Tank Is Not Hot?

If the water in your water heater tank isn’t hot, it typically means you have a faulty thermostat. When that’s the problem, the only troubleshooting you have to do is replace the thermostat. Sometimes the thermostat is simply set to the wrong temperature. If you’re having trouble getting hot water, always check the water heater’s thermostat first, as it can sometimes be bumped by accident. Typically, it’s most efficient when raised during winter and lowered during summer, similar to air conditioning.

What Are Common Water Heater Problems?

Water heaters can encounter a variety of different problems throughout their lifespan, and it’s important to be able to recognize them quickly. Here are a few of the most common.

Smelly Water

Water that has a strong odor can be a serious problem, but it’s fairly easy to test. If you leave the hot water running for a few minutes and the rotten-egg smell from the faucet doesn’t subside, you probably have bacteria growing in the water heater tank. If the smell is more similar to garlic, however, you probably just need to relight the pilot light.

No Hot Water

Not having hot water usually means your water heater isn’t functioning at all. The cause of this could be minor, or it could be something major. Perhaps there’s simply a problem with the thermostat, but in some cases, there may be a problem with your water tank’s ability to keep water hot.

Not Enough Hot Water

When hot water only lasts for a short while, it can be pretty annoying, especially if you’re trying to clean or take a shower. If you’re having this problem, it typically means your tank is having trouble keeping water hot at a rate that works for your needs. It may be time for an upgrade, though a simple water heater repair might work in other cases.

Leaking Water Tank

A leaking water tank offers more than one kind of trouble. Not only will it fail to keep your water heated sufficiently, but you could also experience water damage depending on the water heater’s location. Check the water heater and any connected pipes for pools of water, as you may also need plumbing services.

How to Decide if You Need to Repair or Replace Your Water Heater

The best way to determine whether you should get maintenance services or replacement services is to consider how old the water heater is. If it’s past the limit of its average lifespan, it’s typically better to get a water heater replacement. If you still have a relatively young water heater and are suffering from something like a minor leak, a water heater repair job can probably get a few more years out of the same unit.
